In 1892, the physician and medical administrator Simon Flexner began research on cerebrospinal meningitis, a meningococcal disease with an untreated mortality rate between 70 and 90%. Ludwig Edelstein was a professor of Classics, The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Edelstein was born in Berlin in 1902. He received his Ph. D. in Greek at Heidelberg in 1924 and later taught at the University of Berlin. He came to the U.S. in 1934 and taught in the History of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University until 1947.
